Develop age-appropriate music and movement lesson plans for children from infancy to age eight in group settings using developmentally appropriate practices. Investigate the benefits of music of movement experiences to the physical, cognitive, and social and emotional development of young children. Course Content Outline I. Using instruments with children Course Objectives Course Objectives 1. Describe how various theoretical perspectives promote the development of young children through music and movement experiences; 2. Explain the benefits of music and movement experiences to the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of young children; 3. Utilize a variety of strategies for incorporating music and movement as tools for managing group behavior and easing daily transitions; 4. Develop an understanding of the key role of music and movement in stimulating synaptic connections of the neurons in the brain and coordinating bilateral development; 5. Practice creative expression and support for healthy exercise through music and movement experiences with young children; 6. Recognize and value a variety of cultures and traditions through application of music and movement; 7. Describe the basic concepts in music: beat, tempo, loud, soft and expression; 8. Develop age-appropriate music and movement lesson plans for children from infancy to age eight in group settings; 9. Create inexpensive musical instruments for young children; and 10. Practice playing a variety of musical instruments: autoharp, piano, guitar, recorder. Methods of Evaluation Classroom Discussions Essay Examinations Projects Skill Demonstrations Reading Assignments 1. Read "The effect of a music/movement program on preschooler's motor rhythmic ability" (Venetsanou, Donti & Koutsouba 2014) and discuss in small groups. 2. Research various sources for examples of American Folk songs, reading about the history and evolution of traditional songs, chants, games and incorporate into students song binder. Writing, Problem Solving or Performance 1. Develop and write lesson plans for young children that incorporate developmentally appropriate practices into experiences with music and movement. 2. Practice playing simple tunes for young children on the autoharp, piano, ukulele, or recorder. Other (Term projects, research papers, portfolios, etc.) 1. Create inexpensive handmade musical instruments for use with young children in music and movement exercises. 2. Research a variety of cultures and tradition through exploration of music (songs, stories, chants, games).
